Have Fun While Creating

Hey Gang,

This week is really flying by!

I just wanted to take a minute and talk about having fun while creating art.

“Have fun while creating art? Duh!”

I think for me personally, I need to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the experience of creating.

It’s easy to get lost in the hustle. We try to make art that is important, that will be loved by others, that is serious. We get stuck in a routine—we lose sight of why we started creating in the first place.

When I first began taking pictures, all I had was a disposable camera. Yet, in spite of not having fancy gear—I still found joy in the simple act of making photos. It was fun to capture images of my friends & random things I found on the streets. There was no reason behind any of it.

Ironically—almost 20 years later, I’m still doing the same thing!

“WOW, #nerd.”

To change things up, this past week Ashley and I went on a few photo walks with an instant camera. It was great to just roam the streets and make funny images with no real goal in mind. We laughed together, we experimented with different settings & backgrounds, we made fools of ourselves—we had fun.

Art Is Entertainment

There’s all sorts of reasons to make photos.

To Document Important Events
To Tell A Story
To Influence Social Change
To Sell A Product

Just like watching movies & listening to music—creating art is a form of entertainment. We find joy in making things, it’s fun, it helps us relax, it connects us with other people.

Stop being so serious all the time.

Don’t forget to spend time creating for fun. Remember why you started making photos and hold on to that wonder.

  1. So cool! Love how the pix turned out. What you said is so true though, the art should be appealing to ourselves over others. Every single time.
