What Am I Doing With My Life?

Hey Gang,

According to @worldcalender, today is Awkward Moments Day (Thanks Julie).

Happy Awkward Moments Day Gang!

What better day to announce my new upcoming book???

What Am I Doing With My Life? Vol. 1

“I believe this will be the most important piece of work that I’ve done so far—because it focuses on the people closest to me in life. I want to share their stories with wit, humor, & grace.”

What-1

I’m really excited about this project. It’s something I’ve been slowly working on for the past several years. This is as close to the decisive moment as I’ve been able to get. What is the decisive moment??

“To me photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.” —Henry Cartier-Bresson

The decisive moment for me, is capturing a once in a lifetime moment, an expression, a pose, a chance happening, something out of the ordinary—and composing it in a way that is balanced in form & composition.

Henry Cartier-Bresson was the master of the decisive moment—he pioneered the art form & coined the term for this type of candid photography.

I’m also a huge fan of the visual pun made popular by photographer Elliott Erwitt—among others.

What-8

I’ve combined these two photography styles—the decisive moment & the visual pun, in order to create the images for this new book.

Now you all know why I’m always carrying a camera….

These types of moments don’t happen very often. I must always be prepared to capture them. It is imperative. I’ve become obsessed in fact, to the point where if I leave my house without a camera—I’ll turn around and go back.

There’s no excuse.

What-3

Make no mistake—this will not be a book of snapshots. These are once in a lifetime moments—images that will make you take a second look, think, and maybe laugh.

What-6

Most of the images are of family members & close friends.

Why Volumes?

This is my first edition. There will be more. This is a passion that I’ve had since I snapped my first awkward photo nearly 20 years ago. I will continue to search for these types of images and publish more books as my collection grows.

What-9

As of right now my goal is to have the first volume completed & printed by June.

Which means I still have a little more time to capture these awkward moments. If you’d like a chance to be featured in the book—invite me over for salad or BBQ, allow me to attend one of your family events, or just do something weird around me whenever you get a chance.

What-5

There will be more updates as things progress.

Thanks for reading!

The images in this blog are meant to be a representation of the eventual book images. These may or may not be photos that are featured in the book. Funny, once in a lifetime moments—you get the idea.
